LEADING THE WAY
On
March 7, 2003, the J.W. Vines Medical Society leadership was
represented at the Inauguration of France Cordova, PhD as the new U.C.
Riverside Chancellor. Dr. Cordova is the first Latino woman
Chancellor of the University of California. Following her graduation
from Stanford University with a B.A. in English, Doctor Cordova was
admitted the graduate school of Physics at Cal Tech where she earned a
doctorate degree in astrophysics. Prior to returning to academic
research at the University of California, Dr Cordova was chief
research scientist for the National Aeronautics Space Administration (N.A.S.A.).
Dr. Cordova has been extremely helpful in assisting the Vines Medical
Society in effecting significant alterations in the Biomedical
Sciences Program at U.C. Riverside and pledges continuing support.
On May 29 – June 1,
2003 the J.W. Vines Medical Society will participate in 17th
Annual Region VI National Medical Association Convention, to be
convened at the Hyatt Grand Champions Hotel, Palm Desert, California.
A tentative agenda is appended. The J.W. Vines Medical Society will
be leading three sessions. The first is a round table discussion on
Health Care Desparities in Treatment with Respect to Ethnic
Minorities. The second session will be a workshop on accessing
the Legislature and Media for Political Action-- How the Vines Society
changed the University of California. The third session will be
lead by Cherry Houston, R.N., PhD. HIV Prevention. A Community –
Based Approach. On Friday May 30, 2003, the Vines Medical Society
will host a welcome/hospitality reception. We certainly hope everyone
will attend. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit will be
offered.
The J.W. Vines Medical
Society continues to support secondary, pre-med/undergraduate and
medical students in their academic pursuits. This year two students
will be recognized by the Vines Medical Society at the U.C. Riverside
Black Baccalaureate. Brigette Watkins (2002) who is now enrolled at
U.C. San Francisco in the MD/PhD Neurobiological Sciences Program, and
Nathan Irvin (2003), who will be enrolling in Harvard Medical
School in the Fall.
The J.W. Vines
Foundation will be soliciting tax deductible donations for previously
owned computers, software, office furniture and supplies. As the
Foundation continues to gain momentum by obtaining institutional
support from various funding sources, it is anticipated that within
the next several months, the Vines Foundation will be empowered to
support more student programs than ever before, provide more grant
money than ever before, work study aid, and perhaps a summer extern.
As another school year
comes to a close the J.W. Vines effect and influence continues to make
a positive impact not only the health and well being on those sick and
suffering in our community, but on our schools, our colleagues, our
friends and loved ones and especially on the children.
You are all helping to make a difference.
Please, please continue your support.
A. J. Rogers, MD
